5. Sherlock Holmes
is a 2009 action/mystery film directed by Guy Ritchie, starring Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law who portray Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson respectively.
In the film, set in 1891, detective Holmes and his companion Watson are hired by a secret society to foil a mysticist’s plot to expand the British Empire by seemingly supernatural means.
Lord Blackwood, the villain, is apprehended just as he is about to sacrifice a maiden in a Masonic ritual under London. He goes to the gallows, but returns to life and continues his seemingly-supernatural reign of terror, which is supposed to culminate in a terrorist atrocity (involving a new-fangled chemical weapon) that will strike at the heart of the British Empire. It’s up to an ingenious, two-fisted detective, his stalwart sidekick, and a femme fatale with mixed motives to save the day.
This movie deserves to be watched. It comes with sparkles of spontaneity and fun. And it may even leave you wanting a sequel! Give it a try!
4. Shutter Island
Shutter Island is in 4th no. from the list of Top 5 movies. From the very start of Shutter Island, even in the opening credits, director Martin Scorsese is out to mess with minds. The entire premise of Shutter Island is delicious and unsettling.
Two duly appointed federal marshals travel to Shutter Island, a mental ward for the criminally insane. Nearly all of its 66 patients are violent psychopaths. Teddy is investigating the strange disappearance of one of them, Rachel Solando, who drowned her three children.
With the hospital located on a small island and surrounded by miles of cold Atlantic water and rock bluffs, she is presumed to be hiding or dead. But as Daniels digs deeper into the case, he finds more secrets and perhaps more truth about the island and himself than he ever wanted to find. During their stay, the marshals discover oddities in the behaviors of both the ward’s patients and staff.
Since we experience Shutter Island only through Teddy’s (Caprio) unreliable eyes, we don’t know what to believe.
This is a film that will make you question your own sanity. A film that will leave you breathless. A film that will re-ignite the thriller genre. A film that will leave you, and the main character, searching for answers.
This is also a film I would recommend seeing a second time. In fact, it is even better the second time, and a must-watch if you haven’t seen it. All those pieces of that puzzle you didn’t catch the first time, you will catch it on the second watch.

3. Catch Me If You Can
“Catch me if you can” is on 3rd no. in the top 5 best movie list. It is a beautiful recreation of the 1960s as they were viewed by the cinema of that time. The film starred Leonardo Di Caprio & Tom Hanks. ‘Catch Me If You Can’ was directed by Steven Spielberg.
Set in the Sixties, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jnr in this true story of Frank’s teenage years, in which he became one of the world’s most renowned fraudsters, cashing over $2.5 million in fake cheques before his 21st birthday and posing as a pilot, doctor, lawyer, and college professor whilst keeping the FBI trailing behind.
The fact that he did it all between the age of 16 and 21 is as funny as remarkable. However, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is never far behind, as agent Carl Hanrity pursues the check fraud Abagnals is committing.
As mentioned earlier, The story is inspired by a real story. I don’t know in how many ways it is true but watching this guy all I wanted to see was him pulling more of his nice little tricks. The scene where he pretends to be a pilot, doctor, lawyer, and college professor is just great. If you want a nice funny movie, not too heavy, this one will definitely please you.
2. The Shawshank Redemption(1994)
On no. 02 of the top 5 best movie list, The Shashank Redemption. Currently sitting pretty at the top of IMDB’s top 250 movies, The Shawshank Redemption has long been considered by many to be one of the best films of recent times and certainly, one of the greatest ever made.
In 1946 Andy Dufresne is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. He’s sent to Shawshank State Prison. It is here that he befriends ‘Red’ (Morgan Freeman) another convict with the ability to acquire certain objects for his fellow inmates.
Red takes a shine to Andy and their friendship blossoms. Andy’s education and business background elevates his standing within the prison, helping guards with their tax returns and in particular becoming responsible for the warden’s financial accounts.
In the prion, he seems to be a model prisoner, despite protesting his innocence. But he still yearns for freedom – and he still longs to escape. Rejecting clichés of prison films, this thoughtful, measured film instead focuses on human potential and the survival of hope even in the most hopeless situations.
This becomes a must-watch movie. It portrays one of the greatest friendships of all time and how important it is to have trust in others. Despite having many dark scenes and tragic events, the Shawshank Redemption is able to fill one with hope and the ending is sure to leave you with a smile.
1. The Prestige
At last but on Top on List of Top 5 best movie, The Prestige. The movie is about two rival stage magicians- Alfred Borden and Robert Angier who are obsessed with creating the best stage illusion and engage in competitive one-upmanship with tragic results.
Cristopher Nolan has done a tremendous job in assembling the cast. Both Hugh Jackman (Angier) and Christian Bale (Borden) suit their roles perfectly. In a story that requires actors to display a variety of emotions, both the actors have done an incredible job.
In the beginning, Cutter (Michael Caine) explains to a little girl(indirectly us) about magic tricks. He says: “Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called “The Pledge”.
The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird, or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course… it probably isn’t.
The second act is called “The Turn”. The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary.
Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet.
Because making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back. That’s why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call “The Prestige”.
It is recommended to view the file a second time to actually notice that very small details and interpret the scenes after seeing the ending. All in all, Prestige is a fantastic movie, and a must-watch if you haven’t seen it and no matter if you have seen it already!
